Art Gallery Wedding

Please can all my weddings involve two grooms, a dog, a cat, an art gallery, a breakdancing ring bearer and comedic seagulls? Thank you.

Alex and Rogan had the most stylish intimate wedding, in an art gallery. Yes. An art gallery. They were married by their best friend under a canoe installation, whilst the sun set over the Pacific behind them. Rogan’s brother Trace was ring bearer, and as it turns out, an incredible breakdancer. Now, in 1984 I was in a breakin’ crew with my brother. Breakdancing has been part of my life for decades, and as Trace hit the dancefloor so did my jaw. He had MOVES.

I digress.

The Museum of Contemporary Art

My grooms got ready together, under the watchful eye of Olive the cat and Poppy the dog. Some champagne later, I drove us to the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego. We had a little time to walk through the exhibits, and I had my eye on a couple of locations in particular.

Robert Irwin’s installation. Wow. We turned the corner and it took my breath away. Part of “1° 2° 3° 4°”, Irwin cut three rectangles in the gallery’s tinted windows to create actual openings. They not only frame details of the view, but they play tricks on the eye. The 1975 debut album cover immediately flashed in my brain, and I framed the header image you see above with that in mind.

A stylish wedding

After the romantic ceremony we spent some time on the cliffs as the sun went down. I love doing portraits out in the open – so many passersby stopped to congratulate my couple! On our return we were able to catch a little of the mariachi band – a surprise for the guests.

The reception was in another gallery of sorts. Herb and Wood has a small private room, which also happens to be an art gallery. So stylish, beautifully lit and intimate. The perfect setting. We were all taken with the paintings – keep your eyes peeled for some serious posing.

Speaking of eyes peeled – I appear in this blog post. This is why I always like to shoot film. I look 20 years younger.

Film Wedding Photos

As always, I’m so grateful to my couples for trusting in the ‘non wedding, wedding photographer’ process. Part of that magic is capturing the day on analogue film, for a bit of instant nostalgia and a bit of anarchy. I used a variety of 35mm and medium format cameras, and Uncle Alan’s Polaroid Land Camera.
